Aromatherapy is the use of
plant oils including essential oils for psychological and physical
well-being.
The Chinese may have been one of the first to
use the plant oils for physical well being.
The Egyptians made a crude
distillation machine to enable them to extract cedar wood oil.
Aromatherapy dates back thousands of years, although the word
Aromatherapy was only introduced in the 20th century by René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, when he became interested in the use of
essential oils for medicinal use.
Oils of cedar wood, clove,
nutmeg myrrh and cinnamon were used by the Egyptians to embalm the dead. Even
after many centuries when a tomb was opened a faint scent of the herbs and
oils used for embalming was still apparent.
The use of essential oils never stopped but
the scientific revolution minimized
the popularity and use of essential oils in everyday life.
Today we use these essential
oils and bath salts to put into our bath water so we can soak and relax
while inhaling all the essence of the oils
or scented candles which
creates a calming atmosphere.
Everyone should take the time at least once a
week to pamper and free themselves from the cares of the world even for an
hour.
